Is your skin often dry? Do you have excess weight gain? Do you feel tired often? If you nod in the affirmative, you may probably be experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism. It is a condition when your thyroid gland is underactive and doesn’t produce enough hormones.

Symptoms

  • Skin dryness
  • Weight gain
  • Swollen face
  • Constipation
  • Croaky voice
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Slowed physical and mental functions
  • Depression
  • Slower heart rate
  • Fatigue
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Increased sleepiness
  • Weak and painful muscles
  • Goiter

Causes/ Reasons

Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid glands fail to produce adequate hormones. It can be due to a number of factors such as Hashimoto’s disease, over-responsiveness to hyperthyroidism treatment, radiation therapy, surgery, and medications. If you are a woman over 60, or if your family members have a history of thyroid disorder, you are more likely to get affected by this medical condition.

Treatment

Blood tests, thyroid ultrasound, and scans are done in order to diagnose this condition. Hypothyroidism may become life-threatening if not treated. Medications, including synthetic hormone therapy, are the preferred treatment for this medical condition.

Consult your doctor for a detailed medical examination and treatment.
