Treatments

Interventional Radiology (IR)

The Radiology department in Amrita is a pioneer in India in providing the full spectrum of image guided interventions. From complex biopsies to arterial embolization (blocking) for life threatening bleed to angioplasty (opening) of blood vessels of the lower limb to draining biliary system in cancer patients to percutaneous treatments in patients with cirrhosis, we have a team of highly experienced doctors who will take very good care of you. IR techniques reduces hospital stay and costs and, many times, is much safer than open surgeries. We work closely with our surgical colleagues and we take pride in team approach and ethical standards which ensure the best outcome for patients.

The IR unit offers specialized treatment to patients undergoing liver transplantations and is a critical factor in Amrita`s success as a leading transplant unit of the country. We routinely perform TIPSS, a complex vascular procedure to relieve fluid accumulation in cirrhosis patients. Our department is one of the leading centers for TACE, TARE and thermal ablation (RFA & Microwave) of liver cancer.

Prostate artery embolization, a pin-hole technique to relieve the symptoms of prostate enlargement, is a new procedure we offer. Uterine artery embolization for fibroids is also performed routinely. Chyle (lymph) leak is a rare and difficult-to-treat disease which affects both adults and children. Our department is a pioneer in treatment of this disease.

The department experience over the last two decades has been published in several national and international journals. We have trained many young interventional radiologists who now offer these services in other parts of the country.
