In observance of World Glaucoma Week, Amrita Hospital, Kochi, in collaboration with the Glaucoma Society of India, organized a series of events aimed at raising awareness about this debilitating eye condition. The week began with the "Glaucoma Walkathon" held at the hospital, where doctors, students, and staff participated. The event commenced with an insightful awareness talk, emphasizing the importance of early detection in combating glaucoma, which is the second leading cause of global blindness.

Throughout the week, Amrita Hospital hosted a Glaucoma Awareness campaign, featuring engaging skits and informative talks at the hospital atrium from 8:30 to 10:30 am. Optometry students played a pivotal role in spreading awareness by conducting a skit that shed light on the nuances of glaucoma and its implications. The skit emphasized the significance of regular eye exams, especially for individuals over the age of 60, as glaucoma often manifests without warning signs. The campaign aimed to encourage people to prioritize their eye health and undergo screenings to detect glaucoma early, as timely intervention can significantly slow down or prevent vision loss associated with the condition.

As part of the initiative, Amrita Hospital, Kochi offered Free IOP (Intraocular Pressure) and Free Glaucoma Screening from the 11th to the 14th of March 2024. The camps offered free eye pressure checks and glaucoma screenings to promote proactive eye health practices. These initiatives played a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of regular eye exams, and people who are at higher risk for glaucoma.

Given that glaucoma often manifests without warning signs, these screenings served as a proactive measure to identify the condition in its early stages when interventions are most effective. Moreover, the camps facilitated education on the significance of timely intervention, emphasizing how early detection can significantly slow down or even prevent vision loss associated with glaucoma.
