Overview
The Department of Advanced Interventional pulmonology at Amrita hospital in Kochi was established in 2017 with the aim of providing a state of the art and point of care facility for managing various complex airway and pleural disorders. We were fortunate to be able to start India’s 1st exclusive Interventional pulmonology services under the banner ABIP. Our team has completed more than 4000 diagnostic Bronchoscopic procedures & nearly1500 rigid bronchoscopic therapeutic procedures to date. During the past 7 years, we have achieved numerous milestones and are known in the community for our innovative Bronchoscopic lifesaving procedures and compassionate care towards suffering patients.
We were also fortunate to perform some unique procedures like worlds 1st transbronchial lung cryo biopsy done in infants to diagnose the etiology of ILD, 1st in India to perform airway stenting in newborn child for treatment of airway stenosis & a significant number of airway reconstruction procedures as well.
We also started India’s 1st advanced Interventional pulmonology fellowship program in 2017 and have trained more than 30 doctors from different parts of the world in performing high risk airway interventions.

FAQs
Interventional pulmonology is a developing medical sub-specialty from its parent specialty of pulmonary medicine. It deals specifically with minimally invasive Bronchoscopic and Thoracoscopic procedures for diagnosis and treatment of neoplastic as well as non-neoplastic diseases of the airways, lungs, and pleura.
You should consider consulting with an Interventional pulmonologist if you are suffering from progressive breathlessness, cough, fever, weight loss, haemoptysis (spitting of blood) or in case of any chronic undiagnosed Respiratory ailments.
The Interventional pulmonology program at Amrita, provides treatment for:
- Primary lung cancer
- Cancers that metastasize to the lung
- Airway obstruction (due to an abnormal growth)
- Mediastinal and hilar adenopathy
- Undiagnosed lung nodules and masses
- Pleural diseases (including effusions or undiagnosed disease)
- Bronchopleural fistulas
- Pneumothoraces
- Diagnosis of Interstitial lung diseases
- Post TB airway complications.
- Post Intubation Tracheal stenosis repair.
- Diagnosis of the cause for non-resolving Pneumonia
- Diagnosis of occupational lung disorders
- Tracheobronchomalacia
- Excessive dynamic airway collapse
- Bronchoscopic treatment of poorly controlled Asthma
Bronchoscopy is a procedure that lets doctors look at your lungs and air passages. It's usually performed by a Pulmonologist who specializes in lung disorders. During bronchoscopy, a thin tube (bronchoscope) is passed through your nose or mouth, down your throat and into your lungs. Bronchoscopy is most frequently performed using a flexible bronchoscope. However, in certain situations, such as if there's a lot of bleeding in your lungs or a large object is stuck in your airway, a rigid bronchoscope may be needed. Common reasons for needing bronchoscopy are a persistent cough, infection, or something unusual seen on a chest X-ray or CT scans. Bronchoscopy can also be used to obtain samples of mucus or tissue, to remove foreign bodies or other blockages from the airways or lungs, or to provide treatment for lung problems.
