Paediatric Neurology

Division of Paediatric Neurology is well –equipped to treat the entire range of neurological disorder in children. The Division has the expertise for the evaluation and management of neurological disorders including epilepsy, sleep disorders, stroke, neuromuscular disorders, behavioural disorders and learning disabilities.

All types of neurological disorders affecting children like epilepsy, autoimmune disease, demyelination, neurogenetic diseases, neurometabolic diseases, neuro muscular diseases, neuro developmental disorders like autism, ADHD and SLD.

Department of paediatric Neurology, Amrita Hospital, Kochi is one of the largest and oldest departments in the whole country. It was one of the first departments to start DM program in Paediatric Neurology. It is one of the few centers in south Asia where comprehensive Paediatric Neurology, Paediatric Neurosurgery, Child psychiatry Neonatal neurology service, are provided under one roof. Paediatric neurologist trained from the department have been working in different parts of the world & country. Our centre conducts the most number of pediatric epilepsy surgeries in the country with the backup of a dedicated epilepsy surgery teams.

We provide comprehensive care of children with neurological disorders. We have the backup of a well-equipped PICU, NICU, Pediatric Neurosurgery, developmental Paediatricians, child psychiatrist, child psychologist & Pediatric OT, BT therapists.

State of the art facilities for the diagnoses and treating different types of paediatric epilepsies monitoring units, Paediatric Epilepsies surgery team, ROSA unit, invasive EEG are available.

Ours is a tertiary care Centre, well equipped and advanced therapies, techniques and medications to care for and treat our patients. We have the back up of a well equipped with all advanced life support system.

1. Epilepsy

• Comprehensive paediatric epilepsy program with facilities for diagnosis and management of difficult epilepsies in children of all age groups
• Internationally acclaimed special expertise in EEG monitoring of newborn and small infants
• Pre-surgical evaluation of drug-resistant epilepsies in children with facilities for VEEG monitoring, PET and SPECT studies, and electrocorticography
• Ketogenic diet program for drug-resistant epileptic encephalopathies which are not amenable to surgery
• Clinical psychology services for children with epilepsy along with learning disorders or autistic tendencies.
• Close laison with the clinical genetics team for the evaluation of genetic epilepsies.
   

2. Sleep Disorders

We have a well-equipped sleep lab for doing PSG, MSLT, and PAP titration for various sleep problems.

3. Stroke

• A well-equipped neurosurgery department supports the division in the management of stroke, including revascularisation procedures for rare disorders like Moyamoya disease.
• A 24-hour imaging facility providing CT, the division has MRI, MRV, MRA, and DSA.
   

4. Critical Care

An exclusive Paediatric ICU with a Pediatric ventilator and bedside EEG machine is available for any acute neurological emergencies like status epilepticus and viral encephalitis. The division is well supported by a well-trained critical care team.

5. Behavioural and Learning Disorders

• The Division has child psychologists and special educators for the evaluation and management of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autistic spectrum disorders, and learning disabilities amongst children.
• Special parental guidance is also available.
• Child developmental clinic offering comprehensive services in childhood neurodevelopmental disorders.
   

Neuromuscular Disorders

• The Division uses all the state-of-the-art techniques in the evaluation of the neuromuscular disorders like NCS, EMG, and nerve and muscle biopsy.
• The Division runs weekly multispecialty clinics for the management of children with cerebral palsy, other gait disturbances, and brachial plexus injuries.
   

6. Neurometabolic Diseases

• A comprehensive team involving Paediatric neurologist, clinical geneticists and dietitian for proper dietary therapy of neurometabolic diseases
