Nidhi Nayak, a 23-year-old native of Madhya Pradesh, found a new lease on life after undergoing groundbreaking hand transplant surgery at Amrita Hospital, Kochi. Nidhi's life took a tragic turn in June 2022 when she lost both hands in an electric shock accident at her home, leaving her with severe burns and the need for amputation.

Despite facing numerous challenges following the accident, Nidhi's hope was reignited when she learned about the possibility of transplant surgery. Her journey to recovery took a monumental step forward when she received a generous gift from the family of Jewel Joshi, a 23-year-old from Thrissur Mala, who passed away in a bike accident, resulting in brain death.

Jewel's parents chose to donate their son's organs, including his hands, offering a ray of hope to individuals like Nidhi awaiting life-changing surgeries. Under the guidance of Dr. Subrahmanya Iyer, chairman of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at Amrita Hospital, Nidhi underwent a complex 16-hour surgery, marking the hospital's 15th successful transplant procedure.

After a month and a half of dedicated care and rehabilitation, Nidhi was discharged from Amrita Hospital, Kochi on Monday, her face beaming with gratitude and newfound hope. With tears of joy, Nidhi raised her hands to thank Jewel's family, the medical team, and everyone who supported her throughout her journey.

In a ceremony organized by the hospital staff, Nidhi cut a celebratory cake with her own hands, symbolizing the triumph of hope over adversity. Accompanied by her sister Bipu, Nidhi left the hospital, embarking on a new chapter.
