In the wake of the catastrophic landslide in Chooralmala, Wayanad, Amrita Hospital Kochi's Disaster Management Medical Unit has been at the forefront of delivering vital and compassionate medical care to the affected communities.

Under the leadership of Dr. Jaggu and Dr. Sreekumar, a government-approved twenty-member relief team, comprising seasoned doctors, technicians, and paramedical staff, has been providing advanced medical assistance to those impacted by the disaster. This expert team, with prior experience in disaster-stricken regions such as Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, has been instrumental in offering critical care.

The Disaster Management Medical Unit established its base at the Government Higher Secondary School in Meppadi, near Chooralmala, which serves as the primary rescue center. From this location, Amrita Hospital doctors and staff have deployed to various relief camps with three ambulances, providing essential medical support. Patients requiring advanced care are transported to the mobile hospital unit for further treatment. 

The solar-powered medical unit vehicle is equipped with a mini operation theater, X-ray, ultrasound, echo, ECG, high-speed lab, pharmacy, Doppler scan, and telemedicine facilities, ensuring comprehensive medical care. To date, nearly 1,000 patients have received treatment from the Amrita team.

Following the landslide on July 30, Amritakripa Charitable Hospital in Kalpetta promptly dispatched a medical team to provide immediate aid. Within two days, Amrita Hospital Kochi's Disaster Management Medical Unit vehicle, equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities, arrived in Wayanad to support the ongoing rescue operations.

As of August 5, the Disaster Management Medical Unit is now stationed at Amritakripa Charitable Hospital, continuing to offer free medical aid and transport essential medicines from Amrita Hospital Kochi as needed. All treatments are provided at no cost, and any required medicines not available on-site are swiftly transported from Amrita Hospital Kochi.
