Dr Hisham Ahamed is a consultant cardiologist who manages adult patients with a wide range of cardiovascular conditions. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from J.S.S Medical School, Mysore (Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences), during which he was awarded the Gold Medal for the highest aggregate score in Pathology. Dr Ahamed undertook his internal medicine specialist training at the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai and distinguished himself as the recipient of the Gold Medal for the best outgoing candidate of his batch. He went on to pursue his cardiology specialist training at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kochi which was soon followed by a specialist fellowship in interventional cardiology at the same institute. Dr Ahamed has also undergone advanced fellowship training in cardiac MRI at the Hospital Cruz Vermelha, Lisbon.
In addition to his wide-ranging experience in interventional cardiology and device implants, Dr Ahamed has a passionate and dedicated focus on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). He was instrumental in establishing the first and largest HCM Center of Excellence at the department of cardiology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in 2013. He has been mentored in the niche area of HCM care by Dr Barry Maron and Dr Martin Maron (Tuft’s HCM Centre, Boston), who are considered one of the foremost experts in HCM care worldwide. The Amrita HCM Centre has now become the preferred destination for HCM patients across India and neighboring countries for their comprehensive evaluation and management needs. Dr Ahamed has represented South Asia at the prestigious HCM summit (HCM Summit VI and VII) in 2017 and 2021. He has numerous publications in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Dr Ahamed currently is the co-investigator of studies which relate to the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning as it applies to cardiac imaging in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Dr Ahamed is also the program lead for the Amrita Cardiovascular Genomics program. The Amrita Cardiovascular Genetics Services is the largest, comprehensive cardiovascular genomics service in India and has been founded on a decade of rich experience in managing inherited cardiovascular disease. Under his leadership, Over the last decade, the Amrita Cardiovascular Genetics Services has excelled at providing state of the art genetic testing, comprehensive clinical evaluation, treatment, risk assessment and risk reduction for a whole range of genetic cardiovascular disorders which include cardiomyopathies, channelopathies, aortopathies, premature ASCVD and congenital heart disease. Dr Ahamed has published widely in inherited cardiovascular disease and is also a Council Member of Cardiovascular Genomics (European Society of Cardiology).
Dr Ahamed is also the co-lead for the Amrita Cardio-Oncology program, and he currently serves as the vice president of the Asian Cardio-Oncology Society. The Amrita Cardio-Oncology Clinic at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, is one of the first initiatives of its kind in India, aiming to deliver contemporary evaluation and treatment strategies to promote cardiovascular health in cancer patients. Dr Ahamed has wide experience in managing cardiac amyloidosis, chemotherapy related cardiac toxicity and promoting cardiovascular health in cancer survivors. Dr Ahamed was the one of the principal organizers of the very first cardio-oncology summit in India, the National Cardio-Oncology Summit in 2017 held under the aegis of the International Cardio-Oncology Society.
