The Department of Cytogenetics at Amrita Hosptial, Kochi, successfully conducted a two day Hands On Training and Workshop in Cytogenetics, on 24th and 25th April 2026, attracting clinicians, researchers, and students from across India. The Cytogenetics Laboratory at Amrita Hospital, has been transformative in delivering timely, accurate results that shape treatment decisions. The workshop reinforced this legacy by bridging classroom knowledge with real world laboratory practice, ensuring participants gained both technical expertise and clinical perspective.
The program was inaugurated by Dr. Prem Nair, Provost and Group Medical Director, whose steadfast support has enabled the Cytogenetics and Clinical Genomics laboratories to expand their scope, embrace cutting edge technologies, and continually raise standards in diagnostics and patient care.
Dr. Vidya Jha, Head of Cytogenetics and Advanced Centre for Clinical genomics, delivered “Foundations of Cytogenetics: Evolution and Clinical Applications” and a practical overview of microarray applications, bridging theory with laboratory practice. The other academic program featured distinguished faculty contributions. Dr. Sheela Nampoothiri, Clinical Professor in Pediatric Genetics, delivered “Navigating Chromosomal Anomalies: A Clinician’s Lens”, offering deep insights into rare genetic disorders and underscoring the critical role of precise cytogenetic diagnosis in improving patient outcomes. Dr. Neeraj Sidharthan, Clinical Professor and Head of Clinical Haematology & Stem Cell Transplant, presented “Cytogenetics in Day to Day Hematology Practice”, highlighting how cytogenetic findings directly inform therapeutic strategies and enhance decision making in hematological malignancies.
Participants engaged in structured hands on training across karyotyping, FISH, and microarray techniques, gaining practical skills with direct relevance to patient care. The workshop concluded with certificate distribution by Dr. Prem Nair, while Dr. Vidya Jha highlighted the program’s role in empowering clinicians, researchers, and students to sharpen diagnostic precision and contribute meaningfully to advancing healthcare. Special acknowledgments were extended to the dedicated Cytogenetics Laboratory staff, whose tireless efforts ensured the success of the event, reaffirming Amrita Hospital’s commitment to diagnostic excellence and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
