A team of doctors at Amrita Hospital in Kochi successfully carried out a rare and complex surgery that resulted in the safe delivery of a baby for a 39-year-old woman from Nenmara, Palakkad. The woman sought treatment after doctors discovered an abnormally thin lower uterine segment—a condition that developed due to two previous cesarean sections and a surgery to remove uterine fibroids. The thinning of the uterine wall to just one millimeter posed a serious risk of uterine rupture, severe bleeding, and preterm birth.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Radhamany. K and Dr. Janu. M. K, performed an open mesh metroplasty at 24 weeks of pregnancy to reinforce the weakened uterine wall. This procedure involved the use of a macroporous polypropylene mesh to support the thin lower uterine segment, which had been compromised by the scars from previous surgeries.
The patient received close monitoring with ultrasound examinations every two weeks. After ten weeks, she successfully delivered a healthy baby weighing 2.7 kilograms via cesarean section. This marks the first time in Kerala that a safe delivery has been achieved through open mesh metroplasty at such an early stage of pregnancy.
