Diagnostic Tests And Procedures

  • Joint Aspiration and Injection: This procedure involves the removal of fluid from a swollen joint (aspiration) to relieve pain and inflammation, or the injection of medications such as corticosteroids directly into the joint to decrease inflammation and improve joint function.
  • Soft Tissue Injections: Similar to joint injections, these are performed around tendons or bursae to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
  • Ultrasound Screening Imaging: Used to visualize joints, tendons, and soft tissues, ultrasound helps in diagnosing conditions and guiding needle placement during aspirations and injections.
  • Bone Density Scans (DEXA): A diagnostic tool that measures bone mineral density to assess the risk of fractures and diagnose conditions like osteoporosis, which are common in rheumatologic patients.
  • Capillaroscopy: A non-invasive procedure that examines the small blood vessels (capillaries) in the skin, often used to diagnose and monitor diseases like systemic sclerosis.
  • Blood Tests: Various blood tests are performed to detect markers of inflammation, antibodies associated with autoimmune diseases, and other important indicators of rheumatic diseases.

Treatment

Treatments in the field of rheumatology, treatment is highly personalized and tailored to the specific conditions and needs of each patient. The goal is to manage symptoms, maintain optimal function, and prevent disease progression.

Medications are the cornerstone of rheumatologic treatment, with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologic agents playing pivotal roles. DMARDs and biologics specifically target underlying disease mechanisms, which can modify the disease course and prevent joint damage.

Physical therapy is an essential component, helping to improve range of motion, strengthen muscles, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life. Lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes and joint protection techniques support overall health and minimize the impact of diseases. In cases of severe joint damage, surgical interventions may be necessary.

Regular monitoring and follow-up are crucial to adjust treatments and monitor for side effects of long-term medication use, while education and support empower patients to manage their health effectively.
