A two-day intensive training and workshop on Cytogenetics commenced today at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, aimed at advancing knowledge and skills in the field of genetic diagnostics. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Dr. Prem Nair, Group Medical Director of Amrita Hospitals, who emphasized the critical role of cytogenetic techniques in modern medicine.

The workshop, designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of technical aspects, encompasses a wide array of topics, including conventional karyotyping of prenatal samples, peripheral blood, and bone marrow. Additionally, methods and principles in fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in hematological malignancies and solid tumors, as well as Microarray technology, are being extensively covered. Discussions on quality assurance for cytogenomic analysis and ISCN nomenclature are also integral components of the workshop.

Participants from diverse backgrounds including clinicians, pathologists, scientists, and postgraduate medical students from across the country are benefitting from the mentorship of esteemed faculty members such as Dr. Vidya Jha, HOD Cytogenetics and Organizing Secretary of the Workshop, Dr. Seethalakshmy, Head of the Department of Pathology, Dr. Anil Kumar, Head of the Department of Microbiology, and Dr. Manoj Unni, Professor of Clinical Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation, among others.

Dr. Vidya Jha highlighted the pivotal role of recent advancements in cytogenetic techniques in diagnosing major chromosomal abnormalities, enabling timely treatment interventions. She emphasized that Amrita Hospital stands as a beacon of excellence in providing cutting-edge diagnostic services in cytogenetics, facilitating improved patient outcomes.

Real-life applications of cytogenetics were elucidated by esteemed speakers including Dr. Sandeep Pattnaik, Dr. Shreya Agarwal, Dr. Anjali Matani, Dr. Gohul, Dr. Vivekananda, and Dr. Suchitra Sivadas, underscoring the critical importance of timely reporting, particularly in cases of life-threatening conditions such as Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APML).

Day two of the workshop commenced with insightful discussions led by Dr. Sheela Namboothiri, focusing on the role of cytogenetics testing in diagnosing constitutional disorders and facilitating genetic counselling for couples based on test results.

Participants actively engaged in hands-on sessions, gaining practical experience in karyotyping and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Real-time analysis and demonstrations of select cases provided invaluable learning opportunities. Dr. Vidya Jha led a session on maintaining quality standards in cytogenetics laboratories, emphasizing the delivery of accurate, timely, and affordable reports.

This national workshop serves as a platform for the exchange of academic knowledge, the application of cutting-edge technology, and hands-on training, thereby propelling advancements in the field of cytogenetics and contributing to enhanced patient care and outcomes.
