Amrita Hospital celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Cytogenetics Lab, established in 2005 at the Amrita School of Medicine. The lab was set up to diagnose genetic disorders, assess prognosis, and guide treatment decisions, starting with a small team of dedicated scientists. It provides genetic tests like karyotyping, FISH, and microarray to diagnose chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome. Over time, it has expanded to process samples for cancer, familial disorders, and other genetic conditions. NGS analyzes the entire genome, while microarray detects specific genetic variations, enhancing the diagnosis of congenital abnormalities, developmental delays, and inherited disorders.
“Our lab has successfully diagnosed thousands of cases, providing critical insights that have shaped patient care and treatment plans. We have also contributed to many research projects and studies. We are the only lab in Kerala catering to different types of samples under one roof,” said Dr. Vidya Jha, Head of the Department of Cytogenetics and Deputy Medical Superintendent, Amrita Hospital.
“From pioneering new techniques in chromosome analysis to implementing the best platform for genomic microarray technology, we have always been at the forefront in this part of the country,” she added. Amrita Hospitals Group Medical Director, Dr. Prem Nair, felicitated the lab team for their exceptional contributions to patient care and diagnostics. As a token of appreciation, he presented mementos to the team members, acknowledging their dedication and excellence in advancing the hospital's diagnostic capabilities.
