Dr Hisham Ahamed completed his medical degree from J.S.S Medical College, Mysore and was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Gold Medal for the highest aggregate marks in pathology during his training. He subsequently went on to pursue a career in internal medicine at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai which is one of the largest tertiary care referral centers in South India. He successfully completed his internal medicine residency program at Chennai in 2008 and received the Gold Medal for the best outgoing resident in internal medicine. Having decided to focus on cardiovascular medicine, he joined the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, which had one of the most prestigious cardiovascular training programs in the country. During his cardiology training, he also received the Gold Medal for the best academic performance amongst cardiology residents. Dr Hisham went on to complete an interventional cardiology fellowship at Amrita and has been a permanent faculty at the institute since 2012. He has also obtained a fellowship in advanced cardiovascular imaging (cardiovascular MRI) from Lisbon and is actively involved in managing the advanced cardiovascular imaging protocols at Amrita.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and other inherited cardiomyopathies are a key area of research for Dr Hisham. In 2013, under the mentorship of Dr Barry.J.Maron from Tufts HCM Center in Boston, he was able to establish the first and largest center of excellence in India, with respect to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kochi. It has now become the preferred destination for HCM patients all across India for their comprehensive evaluation and management needs. The Amrita HCM center is complimented by a state-of-the-art cardiovascular genomics division which is lead by Dr Hisham. He was also instrumental in establishing the first cardio-oncology division in India at the Amrita Institute, which offers a holistic approach and state of the art evaluation protocols which identifies the cardiovascular risk factors of cancer patients. This was established under the umbrella of the International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS).

Dr Hisham currently serves as the director of the Amrita HCM center, the co-director of the Amrita Amyloid Center and the clinical lead of cardiovascular genomics in his capacity as associate professor of cardiology and internal medicine at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kochi.
