Overview

Pediatric Neurosurgery department, a beacon of hope for children and families grappling with neurological conditions. The  department is a specialized unit dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of neurological disorders in children, from the newborn period through the teenage years.

The  team is trained to communicate effectively with children of all ages, making them feel comfortable and safe during their medical journey. Doctors  work closely with other departments and specialists to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care. This collaborative approach ensures that all aspects of a child's health are considered and addressed, from their physical well-being to their emotional and psychological health.

But our commitment to care goes beyond the hospital walls. We understand that a child's illness can have a profound impact on the entire family. That's why we offer support and counselling services for families, helping them navigate the challenges that come with a child's illness. At our Pediatric Neurosurgery department, we don't just treat diseases - we care for children. We are committed to improving the lives of our young patients and their families, one child at a time.

Diseases Treated

Pediatric Neurosurgery department is equipped to diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of neurological conditions in children. Here are some of the core diseases we treat:

  • Pediatric Hydrocephalus: This condition occurs when there's an imbalance in the production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid, leading to fluid accumulation in the brain. We offer a complete spectrum of treatment from close observation in Arrested Hydrocephalus to Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy to placement of Shunts.
  • Pediatric Head and Spinal Injury: Children are more susceptible to head injuries due to their relatively large head size. We offer careful observation for early surgical intervention and management to avoid long-term consequences.
  • Congenital and Acquired Spinal Malformations: Conditions like Spina Bifida are formed very early in life and can vary from being hidden (Spina Bifida Occulta) to obvious lesions (Spina Bifida Aperta). Our multidisciplinary team works in close coordination to create personalized treatment plans.
  • Pediatric Brain Tumors: These include both benign and malignant conditions. Our team can treat complex cases such as supratentorial lesions, ependymoma, Juvenile Pilocytic astrocytoma, medulloblastoma, hemangioblastoma, pontine glioma, etc.
  • Pediatric Spinal Cord Tumors: These tumors can press against the spinal cord and disrupt critical functions of the central nervous system. We typically treat these tumors with a combination of chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and surgery.
  • Chiari Malformations: These malformations occur due to crowding of soft tissues at the foramen magnum. When these malformations warrant surgical management, we can remove the bone that is compressing the brain with a minimally invasive surgery.
  • Craniosynostosis & Other Cranio-facial Conditions: These conditions can affect the shape and development of a child’s head and face during the first year of life. We use a minimally invasive procedure to treat the condition.
  • Pediatric Brain and Spine Infections: We use minimally invasive techniques such as Neuro-navigation, pediatric endoscope and Videoscope to ensure that the desired outcome can be achieved by minimal damage to neural tissue for optimising outcome.
  • Pediatric Epilepsy: It is usually treated by medications however in a significant number of patients with intractable epilepsy that can’t be controlled with medications, we work along with Pediatric Neurologists and Epileptologists to pin-point the cause of seizure disorder and offer a wide range of procedures.
  • Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs): These are meshwork of abnormal blood vessels in brain and spine that are often present at birth (congenital). We work with a team comprising of neurologists, neuro-intervention specialists, to remove the tangled vessels with a minimally invasive procedure.
  • Dystonia: This is caused by a genetic abnormality or prenatal, intra-natal and postnatal injury, resulting in twisted arms and legs and painful muscle contractions. We offer deep brain stimulation and intrathecal pump therapy for children with dystonia.
  • Spasticity: This causes involuntary muscle spasms and tightness and often appears in children with cerebral palsy or brain injury. Our team of experts provides personalized treatment plans, which may include pump therapy.
  • Pediatric Syringomyelia: This happens when cerebrospinal fluid collects in the spinal cord and causes compression of neural structures, damaging the cord. When Syringomyelia is symptomatic, it needs detailed work-up and once the cause of syrinx is identified, it needs to be treated by minimalistic procedures to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Pediatric Spine Pathologies: These include a host of congenital and acquired bony spinal conditions such as of Craniovertebral junction (Atlanto-axial dislocation, Basilar Invagination), Block vertebra, hemivertebra and primary / secondary scoliosis which need to be studied in detail.
  • Foetal Neurological Conditions: Pediatric Neurosurgeons are an inseparable part of Foetal care team that provides antenatal counselling for foetal neurological pathologies and along with Foetal medicine specialists, Pediatric Surgeons, Obstetricians and other specialities to suggest options and future course of action, including foetal interventions if needed.

We use a tiny instrument called an endoscope that we insert through the nose or ears to remove the tumor or lesion.
  • Innovative Therapies: We offer innovative therapies such as pump implantation for children with severe spasticity and stereotactic radiosurgery for treating tumors located near critical structures of the brain.
  • Specialized Clinics: We run specialized clinics for various neurological conditions such as spina bifida, craniosynostosis, cerebral palsy, pediatric epilepsy, hydrocephalus, head injury, and pediatric neuro-oncology. These clinics are attended by specialists from various disciplines, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.
  • Collaborative Approach: We believe in a multidisciplinary approach to care, working closely with neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and other specialists to provide personalized treatment plans for our patients.
