Awdesh Sharma, a 47-year-old contractor hailing from Meerut, was presented with renewed hope for a normal life by his 20-year-old son Utkarsh Sharma who, with the help of Amrita Hospital, Faridabad’s robotic liver transplant surgery, donated part of his liver to gift his father a new life.
Awdesh was suffering from a condition called decompensated chronic liver disease with portal hypertension. This condition caused him to face recurrent fluid accumulation in the abdomen and persistent jaundice. His arduous journey has persisted for a year, marking a period of enduring health struggles. The patient sought guidance from several doctors in Meerut for his health concerns till he met Dr. Prashant Solanki who diagnosed his critical condition and timely referred Awdesh to Amrita Hospital, Faridabad where he attended Liver Clinic and consulted Dr. Bhaskar Nandi, HoD, Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, who discussed the necessity of a liver organ transplant. Following this, the patient engaged with the solid organ transplant team at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad where the consensus was reached on the imperative need for a liver transplant, initiating the necessary workup for the procedure.
Dr. S Sudhindran, HoD, Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) Surgery& Solid Organ Transplantation, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad said, “The liver transplant surgery at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad was done using latest robotic technology with the removal of right half of the liver from the donor performed using a robot. Both donor & recipient made quick recovery from this major surgery and were discharged within 1 and 2 weeks respectively.”
“The surgeries, which combinedly spanned across 12 hours, were conducted by Dr. Sudhindran, Dr. Unnikrishnan G, and me along with a team of other doctors comprising of Dr. Dinesh Balakrishnan, Dr. Binoj ST, Dr. Christi TV, Dr. Krishnanunni Nair, and Dr. Shweta Mallick. We were also assisted by Dr. Mukul Chandra Kapoor, HoD, Anesthesiology, Dr. Vandana Saluja, and Dr. Shankey Garg from the anesthesiology team,” added Dr. Jaya Agarwal, Assistant Professor, Solid Organ Transplant, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad .
After a successful surgery, Awdesh is now on his journey to recovery. Utkarsh, who is pursuing his master’s degree in technology, has also rejoined college after the undergoing robotic surgery to save his father. Robotic surgery allow for the surgical wound to be smaller and inconspicuous leading to early recovery compared to open.
