Overview

Breast cancer arises from breast cells and spreads in stages. Few early symptoms include painless lump in breast or armpit. Other symptoms include blood stained nipple discharge, skin changes including redness of breast, dimpling on skin etc. Breast cancer is a treatable cancer and involves Multi-disciplinary team including Breast Surgeon, Medical and Radiation oncologist, genetic counsellor, pathologist, plastic surgeon, lymphedema expert, psychological counsellor, nutrition expert.

  • Breast symptoms assessment: You may undergo a breast symptom assessment if you have questions about breast pain, nipple discharge, a breast lump, gynecomastia, or other signs and symptoms.
  • Breast screening and diagnostic Imaging: 3D mammogram, MRI breasts, ultrasound or stereotactic guided trucut biopsy of breast lumps or microcalcification, wire localisation for non-palpable breast lesions.
  • Comprehensive multidisciplinary breast cancer care. People who have a new diagnosis of breast cancer, multidisciplinary team of experts, will determine the best course and sequence of therapy for your breast cancer in a supportive environment.

    Surgical innovations make treatment quicker. Accelerated partial breast irradiation provides radiation over several days rather than several weeks. All-in-one surgery combines mastectomy and reconstruction in one procedure. And in some situations, chemotherapy can be used before surgery to shrink a tumor and make it easier to remove call neo-adjuvant chemotherapy.

Breast cancer is most common cancer in females worldwide and in India. In India, 178361 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every year and 90408 die of breast cancer every year.

Breast cancer is a diverse group of diseases. Most common type of breast cancer is invasive ductal carcinoma of no special type which is seen in 70% of patients followed by invasive lobular carcinoma which is found in 15% of patient. Other varieties of breast cancer include inflammatory breast cancer, Paget’s disease of breast, Ductal carcinoma in situ, papillary carcinoma.

A new lump or thickening of breast, upper chest or armpit area, skin changes on breast like rash or redness, puckering, dimpling, nipple discharge which is blood or brown  stained changes seen on nipple or nipple going inwards

Many lumps in breast are harmless, if you have any of the above symptoms, please get it check by Breast Specialist.

Diagnosis of breast cancer is done by mammogram (breast X ray) and ultrasound scan (if you are under age of 35 years) of breast. Diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy where a small piece of tumor tissue is taken and seen under microscope.

Causes of breast cancer are not fully understood. Though there are risk factors associated with breast cancer which include age, genetics, circulating hormones levels, lifestyle, diet and environmental factors. Some factors are modifiable and some are non- modifiable factors.
