Symptoms
Parkinson’s disease affects a specific area of the brain called basal ganglia which causes a decrease in the level of a neurotransmitter called Dopamine. This causes multiple symptoms which include:
- Bradykinesia: Slowness of body
- Rest Tremors: Shakiness in hands while at rest.
- Rigidity: Stiffness in upper and lower limbs
- Postural instability: unable to balance the body while changing position like while turning or sitting or standing.
Other symptoms include decreased smell, constipation, restless leg syndrome, and urinary disturbance.
Parkinson’s disease comes under the umbrella term called “Parkinsonism”. This includes other diseases apart from Parkinson’s’ disease:
Progressive Supranuclear Palsy
Multiple System Atrophy
Corticobasal degeneration
Diffuse Lew body disease
The above four diseases have their subtypes and the main difference between Parkinsons' disease and other types of Parkinsonism is poor response to Levodopa, a medicine that is very effective in Parkinson’s Disease.
Treatment
Parkinson’s disease has an overall good treatment with medicines and the patient needs to continue the medicines lifelong. Supportive treatment like physiotherapy and nutritional support is also required.
Patients who show adverse effect with medications like dyskinesia or frequent on-off periods requires a special type of surgery called Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery. This is a type of surgery that is very safe and the patient remains awake during the operation. Two wires are put inside the brain and a battery is connected outside like a pacemaker. The patient starts improving within a few days.
Other Movement Disorders
- Dystonia
- Essential Tremors
- Ataxias
- Tic disease
- Chorea
Treatment includes medicines and also other treatments like Botox injections, Focused Ultrasound, and Deep Brain Stimulation.
