Dr. Sudheer O.V. joined Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in 1999 and is now working as Professor and Head of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery. He is currently in charge of Laparoscopic Surgery and Robotic Surgery.

Dr. Sudheer is specialized in advanced laparoscopic surgery and is routinely performing bariatric surgery, minimally invasive colorectal surgery, esophageal surgeries and hepatopancreatobiliary surgeries. One of the pioneers in Kerala in laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery, Dr. Sudheer has performed the maximum number of minimally invasive oesophageal surgeries and bariatric surgeries in Kerala. He is keenly interested in laparoscopic hepatobiliary surgery other than bariatric and colorectal surgeries.

  • Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery. One of the first to start bariatric surgery in the country in 2005. Trained in Cleveland Clinic USA.
  • Laparoscopic Hernia Repair: Has done 2500 laparoscopic hernia repairs, has introduced a new technique of 2 Ports TEPP repair and later working on single port laparoscopic hernia repair.
  • Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy: Started in 2003. Was Trained by H. Osugi, Osaka, Japan
  • Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery: Started in 2003.
  • Robotic Surgery: Trained in Robotic Surgery under Prof. Giulianotti and in Samsung Hospital, Korea
  • Principal investigator, MASCOT study, Cefoperazone/sulbactam for treatment of intra-abdominal infections: results from a prospective, randomized, parallel group study in India.
  • Co investigator for the multinational trial- Randomised double blind study of Tigecycline versus Imipenem cilastatin for intraabdominal abcess.-Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi.
  • Co-investigator for a multinational multicentre randomized double blind study comparing the efficacy and safety of AVE 2056 with enoxaparin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.
  • Co Investigator for prospective multicentre double blind, randomized comparative study to establish the safety, tolerability and efficacy of NXL 104/ceftazidime plus metronidazole vs meropenem in the treatment of complicated intra abdominal infections in hospitalized adults.
  • Co- investigator for a phase III, double blind, randomized parallel group placebo controlled study of the intravenous prokinetic agent in the treatment of post operative ileus(POI).
  • Principal investigator for a randomized study to assess the efficacy and safety of the anticancer agent as an adjunctive therapy to systemic chemotherapy and concurrent external beam radiation prior to surgery in subjects with localized or loco-regional esophageal cancer.
  • Co-investigator for a multicenter randomized, double blind placebo controlled study to assess efficacy and safety of prokinetic agent for post operative ilius for subjects undergoing mjor open abdominal surgery.
  • Co investigator for a phase III double blind, randomized study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of BAL 8557 Vs a caspofungin followed by voriconazole regimen in the treatment of Candidemia nd other invasive candida infections.
  • Co investigator for a protocol TAR-ORI-SD001 titled Nuvocid (oritavancin) at single or infrequent doses for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections (SIMPLIFI).
