Dr. (Col) Mala Mathur Sharma is a graduate and post graduate from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune (Pune University). After practising as General Surgeon in various hospitals of Indian Army, she completed 2 years Post-Doctoral Training at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai in 2004. She joined Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences as faculty in 2014 after taking premature retirement from Armed forces.
Dr. Mala has more than 20 years of experience in practice of general surgery and onco-surgery. She has worked as surgical oncologist in leading Centres of Armed Forces for 14 years. She has been performing all surgical oncological procedures of Head and Neck, Gastro-Intestinal , Gynaecological and Thoracic Oncological surgical procedures. She has also been a practicing General Surgeon in a wide variety of setups in Army including high altitude (Leh and Kargil sector).
Dr. Mala has a special interest in breast surgeries and has special training in breast oncoplastic surgeries. She has been practicing oncoplastic breast conserving surgeries for breast cancer in leading Armed Forces Institutions. She has published many papers in international Pubmed approved journal on oncoplastic breast surgeries. Oncoplastic breast surgery is an oncologically approved concept where various plastic surgery techniques of breast are applied to conserve breast in cases of breast cancer without compromising the oncological safety and yet keeping in mind the final cosmetic result of operated breast which includes local rotation flaps, distant flaps and breast implants.
Dr. Mala is also an avid teacher and has been on teaching faculty for graduate and post graduate students in the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College Pune.
