Dr. Vinayan K. P. is presently a professor of Neurology and is the head of the Division of Paediatric Neurology and Amrita Advanced Center for Epilepsy at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Cochin, Kerala, India. He graduated from Medical College, Calicut in 1995. During the MBBS days, he had received several academic honours and was the best outgoing student in several subjects. He was the second rank holder in the Kerala Medical Postgraduate Entrance Examination in 1995. He completed DCH, MD, DNB in Paediatrics from the Institute of Maternal and Child Health, Medical College, Calicut by 1998. Subsequently, he joined for DM Neurology in Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute, Trivandrum. After completing DM Neurology in 2002, he joined as a faculty in the Department of Neurology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Cochin. He was selected for the Asia-Oceania Fellowship in Epileptology by the International League Against Epilepsy and Japanese Epilepsy Research Foundation in 2005 and had training in epilepsy and elecrtrophysiology at National Epilepsy Centre, Shizuoka, Japan. Epilepsy Society of Australia awarded him the fellowship in Paediatric epileptology for the year 2008. Under this fellowship, he underwent one year of advanced training in Westmead Epilepsy Program and Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, Australia. He was also a student at the Venice International Epilepsy Summer School in 2007 and Eilat International Epilepsy Course, Israel in 2009. He is now in-charge of the recently established Amrita Advanced Centre for Epilepsy which is offering state-of-the-art management options for children with difficult-to-treat epilepsies.
Dr. Vinayan was recently appointed as a member of Paediatrics commission of the International League Against Epilepsy. He is also an external examiner of University of Cape Town, South Africa in the discipline of Paediatric Neurology. He is a member of the National Executive Committee of the Indian Epilepsy Society and is recently elected as editor of Epilepsy India, the official news letter of Indian Epilepsy Association and Indian Epilepsy Society. He was an invited faculty in the International Epilepsy Congress, Montreal in 2013. He is currently the secretary of Kerala Association of Neurologists. His main research interest lies in the interrelationship of epilepsy and other disorders of the developing brain like autism and learning disorders. He has been a part of several international clinical trials and research projects and has published research papers in various national and international journals.
Research project in Electronics Research and Development Corporation and developed an expert system on epilepsy. In 2005, he was selected for the Asia-Oceania Fellowship in Epileptology by the International League against Epilepsy and underwent training in Epilepsy at National Epilepsy Centre of Japan in 2005-2006. Epilepsy Society of Australia awarded him the fellowship in pediatric epilepsy for the year 2008.
